At last! Quality science fiction is returning to television. http://slashdot.org[...]sid=06/06/23/011722 So can someone please tell me why the SciFi channel is wasting its time with this? http://www.scifi.com/ecw//
Between constant rehashes of sad, silly monster movie plots and increasingly off-topic junk, it seems like the SciFi channel must have picked up Battlestar Galactica by accident. Yes, I know, the series has its problems, but it is, quite simply, one of the best written dramas on television. Period. In a time when science fiction in film and television has drifted further and further from the mark, Battlestar Galactica dares to focus on old-fashioned ideas like PLOT, CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT, CONFLICT, and (oh no!) cerebral, psycho-philosophical exploration. Throw in some serious consideration of social issues which resonate with today's world and you have something that comes one heck of a lot closer to real science fiction than most of the crap that's getting drooled onto screens both big and small.

The first issue of Jim Baen's Universe is out. www.baens-universe.com Go subscribe. Subscribers can get it online or in a variety of downloadable formats. And as always with Jim Baen's e-pubs, it is unencumbered by DRM of any kind. In fact, there is an excellent anti-DRM article by editor Eric Flint in this issue as well as an article by another personal hero of mine, Michael Hart of Project Gutenberg.
